This 10mL single essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the flowering tops and leaves of French clary sage (Salvia sclarea). It has a complex fragrance profile, starting with sharp, spicy herbal notes and finishing with a subtly sweet, muscat-like aftertaste. This herb has long been valued in rituals of prayer and purification.

Sage and European Tradition

Sage (Salvia) is a Lamiaceae herb, with its genus name derived from the Latin "salvus" (healthy) and "salvere" (to save). In ancient Rome, there was a proverb that said, "Death does not enter a house where sage grows," showing how long this herb has been revered in Europe. Common sage (Salvia officinalis), used in cooking, and clary sage (Salvia sclarea), used for essential oils, are different species. This product is clary sage, known for its opulent fragrance, and has been cultivated primarily in the Provence region of France.

Difference from White Sage

It is also a different species from white sage (Salvia apiana), which is used in traditional smudging ceremonies by Native Americans. While white sage is an "incense for ritual burning of dried leaves," clary sage is a "delicate herbal fragrance distilled as an essential oil." These two materials have been cherished as representing the "sage cultures" of Europe and the Americas, respectively.

FAQ

Are clary sage and white sage the same thing?

These are different plants. Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) is a Lamiaceae herb native to Europe, and its essential oil is extracted through steam distillation. White sage (Salvia apiana) is native to the west coast of North America and has been used by Native Americans in smudging rituals, where dried leaves are burned directly. Although they belong to the same genus Salvia, their cultural backgrounds and uses differ significantly.

Is it different from culinary sage?

This is a different species from "common sage (Salvia officinalis)" used for cooking. This product is "clary sage (Salvia sclarea)," known for its rich aroma, and is a variety cultivated for essential oils. Please do not use it for cooking; instead, use it for aromatic baths or as a body care ingredient.

Can I use it directly on my skin?

Avoid applying the undiluted solution directly to the skin. Dilute to 1% or less with a carrier oil before use. Refrain from use during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or on infants and young children.

How can it be blended with other essential oils?

Clary sage pairs particularly well with floral scents (lavender, rose geranium), citrus scents (bergamot), and woody scents (sandalwood, palo santo). It's an ingredient that adds complexity and depth to blends for meditation or focused activities.
