A copper tongue scraper for a traditional Ayurvedic morning ritual. A durable copper tool that can be used for many years. To be used daily, in conjunction with brushing teeth, to gently cleanse the surface of the tongue every morning.
Ayurvedic Morning Self-Care
In Ayurveda, India's traditional medicine with over 5,000 years of history, it has long been believed that ama (Sanskrit for undigested food and waste products) accumulates on the surface of the tongue overnight. By cleansing the surface of the tongue immediately upon waking, you can keep your mouth clean, clear your sense of taste, and start your day refreshed. This is called "Jihwa Nirmalana" (purification of the tongue) and is one of the Dinacharya (Ayurvedic morning routines). As a way to care for the tongue's surface, which toothpaste and mouthwash cannot reach, it has been passed down through generations in Indian households.
Why Copper?
Copper has been a highly valued material in Ayurveda since ancient times. Compared to plastic or synthetic metals, copper changes beautifully with age and offers appealing durability, lasting for many years. It also has the charm of a craft item that becomes more familiar with use. In Ayurvedic tradition, metals such as copper, silver, and gold are believed to have different properties, and readily available and easy-to-handle copper has long been chosen for tongue scraping.
How to Use
Use first thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth.
Hold both ends, place it at the back of your tongue, and slowly pull it forward.
Do not press hard; repeat 3-5 times with light pressure.
After use, rinse thoroughly with running water and wipe off any moisture with a dry cloth.
Care Instructions
To prevent the formation of verdigris (the greenish-blue patina characteristic of copper), always wipe off any remaining moisture after use. If the surface oxidizes and changes color, gently polish it with lemon juice and a small amount of salt to restore its luster. It is recommended to store it in a dry place and avoid leaving it in humid areas like the bathroom for extended periods.
This is a tool for cleaning the surface of the tongue with a dedicated scraper. In Ayurveda, removing "ama" (undigested toxins) that accumulate on the tongue overnight has been considered one of the practices of "Dinacharya" (morning routine). Its design, which fits the shape of the tongue better than a toothbrush, is a distinctive feature.
Why is copper good?
Copper has long been valued in Ayurveda. Unlike plastic or synthetic metals, it is highly durable and can be used for many years. With age, it develops a unique character, and as a craft, it acquires a tactile quality that improves with use.
I have verdigris (green rust) on it; is that okay?
When copper is exposed to air and moisture, its surface oxidizes and can develop a blue-green patina called verdigris. Gently polishing it with lemon juice and a small amount of salt will restore its luster. Wiping off moisture immediately after use can suppress the formation of verdigris.
Can I use this every day?
Yes, you can use it continuously as part of your daily morning routine. Simply pull it 3 to 5 times with gentle force; there's no need to rub it hard or use it multiple times a day.
