Product Details

A new edition in our Ritual Set series. This set pairs organic white sage, wildcrafted from California's coastal hills, with a natural abalone shell hand-harvested by the ama-san (海女さん) free-divers and local fishermen of Shirahama, Minamiboso, Chiba — where our own operation is based. Unlike most commercial shells, which are cleaned with harsh chemical agents, ours are hand-polished using gentle, non-toxic methods only, preserving each shell's natural color and shimmer.

Together, sage and shell bring fire and water into one simple ritual — one that burns, one that holds and carries.

We especially love the ritual as taught in Anishinaabe traditions (Source: Manitoba Education smudging guidelines) — where smoke is gently guided, part by part, with intention. You can direct the smoke using your hands or a bird's feather.

What sage represents: A medicine of resilience and renewal, burned to clear negative energy and troubled thoughts, so you can return to a clean heart and mind.

What abalone shells represent: In Japanese tradition, abalone is tied to the sea's purifying power, its shimmering inner shell linked to light and good fortune.

How to Use

  1. Open a window to let old energy out.
  2. Light the sage tip, then blow out the flame so it smolders and smokes.
  3. Rest it in your abalone shell to catch the ash.
  4. Cleanse your hands first, drawing the smoke over them.
  5. Guide the smoke over yourself, part by part, using your hands or a bird's feather — never blow on it directly:
    • Head — to think good thoughts
    • Eyes — to see good things
    • Ears — to hear good things
    • Mouth — to speak good words
    • Heart — to feel good things
  6. Sit quietly for a moment before letting the sage burn out completely.

Raw Materials

Salvia apiana (White Sage), Haliotis discus abalone shell (natural, hand-polished)

Usage Notes

Open flame — use in a well-ventilated space, on a heatproof surface. Never leave burning sage unattended.

Storage Method

Store in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture.

This abalone shell is hand-harvested using the traditional free-diving methods still practiced today by the ama (female divers) of Shirahama, Minamiboso, Chiba. Every summer, Shirahama hosts the Minamiboso Shirahama Ama Matsuri, where ama in white robes carry torches and swim through the night sea in a ritual called "Oyaei" (Great Night Swim) — a tradition that has continued for over 60 years since 1964, making it one of Chiba's largest summer festivals.
