Product Details
A new edition in our Ritual Set series. This set pairs white sage, organically wild-harvested in the coastal hills of California, with a natural abalone shell hand-gathered by the ama-san (海女さん) free-divers and local fishermen of Shirahama, Minamiboso, Chiba — where our own base is. Most commercial shells are cleaned with harsh chemical agents; we use no chemicals at all and carefully polish each shell by hand, one at a time, to keep its natural colour and lustre.
Together, sage and shell bring fire and water into one simple ritual — one burns, the other receives and holds it.
We especially treasure the practice handed down in Anishinaabe teachings (Source: Manitoba Education smudging guidelines). Rather than simply letting the smoke drift, you guide it with intention, part by part. Use your hands or a bird's feather to guide the smoke gently.
What sage represents: Cherished in Native North American cultures as a symbol of renewal and new beginnings. It is known for its clean, herbal fragrance.
What abalone shells represent: In Japan, abalone has long been a symbol of good tidings, and dried abalone (noshi-awabi) was traditionally attached to gifts. Its iridescent inner shine is part of its charm.
How to Use
- Open a window slightly for ventilation.
- Light the tip of the sage, then blow out the flame so it smokes.
- Rest it in the abalone shell to catch the ash.
- First, slowly pass the smoke around both hands.
- Guide the smoke gently with your hands or a bird's feather, setting an intention for each part of the body — never blow on it directly. In Anishinaabe teachings, the intentions are said to be:
- Head — to think good thoughts
- Eyes — to see good things
- Ears — to hear good things
- Mouth — to speak good words
- Heart — to feel good things
- Sit quietly for a while and wait for the sage to burn out naturally.

This abalone shell is gathered by the ama (female free-divers) of Shirahama, Minamiboso, Chiba, using the traditional free-diving method still practised there today. Every summer Shirahama holds the Minamiboso Shirahama Ama Matsuri, where ama in white robes carry torches and swim through the night sea in the "Daiyaei" (Great Night Swim), keeping the tradition alive. Running for over 60 years since 1964, it is one of Chiba's largest summer festivals.
