A 10mL single essential oil extracted from the flowers of Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) from Madagascar using steam distillation. It has an exotic, rich, sweet, and heavy floral scent reminiscent of jasmine and gardenia. It is an indispensable ingredient as a middle to base note in high-end perfumes worldwide.

The Ylang Ylang Flower

Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) is an evergreen tree of the Annonaceae family that grows wild in tropical regions such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Madagascar, and the Comoros Islands. "Ylang Ylang" is said to mean "flower of flowers" in Tagalog, and in its native land, it has long been cherished as a symbol of love and blessing, so much so that there was a custom of scattering its petals on wedding beds. Ylang Ylang from Madagascar is known for its superior fragrance and is favored by perfumers worldwide.

The Tradition of "Complete Fractionation" of Fragrance

Ylang Ylang is divided into five grades depending on the distillation time: "Extra," "First," "Second," "Third," and "Complete," each with different fragrance characteristics. The components that emerge first are the most floral, and the longer the distillation, the more woody components appear. As a perfume ingredient, "Extra" is the most prized, and it has been used differently depending on the purpose and desired finish.

How to Use

  1. In an aroma diffuser or for aromatic bathing, for your living room, bedroom, or a special evening. 1-2 drops is a guideline (start with less as the scent is strong).
  2. Aroma Bath: Mix with a carrier oil or natural emulsifier before adding to bath water.
  3. Massage Oil: Dilute to 0.5-1% with a carrier oil before use.

FAQ

What is the origin of the name "ylang-ylang"?

"Ylang Ylang" is a name said to mean "flower of flowers" in Tagalog (Philippines). In its native Philippines and Indonesia, it is a flower that has been cherished as a symbol of love and blessings, to the extent that there has long been a custom of scattering petals on the marital bed.

What do "Extra" and "Complete" mean?

Ylang ylang essential oil is traditionally classified into five grades (extra, first, second, third, and complete) based on distillation time. The "extra" grade, which emerges first, is considered the most floral and highest quality, while longer distillation times result in a more woody composition.

Can I use it directly on my skin?

Avoid applying the undiluted solution directly to your skin. The strong, highly concentrated scent may be irritating, so please dilute it to 0.5-1% with a carrier oil before use. Refrain from using this product if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How many drops are appropriate for a diffuser?

Because ylang-ylang is a very potent essential oil, if you are using it in a 3-6 tatami mat room, start with one drop and adjust to your preference. Too much can cause headaches or discomfort. It can be used more lightly when blended with citrus oils (bergamot, lemon).
