Frankincense Guide: Resin, Essential Oil and Hydrosol
Frankincense has been burned in prayer, ceremony and daily life across ancient Egypt, the Middle East, Africa and India. This guide explains the three forms we offer — resin, essential oil and hydrosol — how they differ, and how to burn resin.
What frankincense is
Frankincense is the dried resin of Boswellia trees: deep, clear and woody, with a resinous sweetness. Scent varies by species and origin — see our guide to nine Boswellia types.

FAQ
Is frankincense the same as olibanum?
Yes. Frankincense, also called olibanum (nyūkō in Japanese), is the resin of trees in the Boswellia genus.
How do I burn frankincense resin?
Light a charcoal tablet on a heat-proof burner or dish. When its surface turns ashy and hot, place one or two grains on top and add more as the scent fades. Ventilate and never leave it unattended.
Which should I start with?
The Frankincense Ritual Gift Set has everything in one box: resin, six charcoal tablets and tongs. If you prefer no fire, try the Frankincense Hydrosol for drinks and room scent.
Do different types smell different?
Yes. Carterii, Sacra, Frereana, Serrata and other Boswellia species and origins differ in scent and in how the resin looks. Our resin is Boswellia carterii from Ethiopia.
Prices include Japanese consumption tax (November 2026).
